Like Sea Shells

Sea Shells

things we are left with
Heirlooms, souvenirs
These waves of history
That shapes us still
In the way we cook
The way we sit
The way we smile
The way we think

History shapes us
and though we go places
We carry it still
In the way we walk
In the way we are

Legacy
The lessons of our mothers
We carry them still
When children look up to us
With wide expectant eyes
And we teach them too
What was taught to us
By those taught before us

That’s why no man is an island
We are all part of something
Part of someone
A people of a kind
We are part of a chain

And all our actions
Our beliefs
Our very lives touch others
In the most discreet ways
Though know we may not

In truth
We don’t really die
We let live
Like the ocean
That rushes and roars still
In seashells
We live on in others
We never really die
We let live
